Previously: When Julian Rosewood saw the ruby birthmark on little Lily's wrist, he knew she was the daughter stolen from him six years ago. But Mrs. Finch had a secret that would shatter them all.

The Safe Behind the Coal Bin

The police arrived within twenty minutes, their sirens cutting through the quiet orphanage grounds like a knife. Mrs. Finch was taken into custody, still screaming about her rights, but the letter in the cellar safe was hers no longer.

Julian held Lily the entire time, his arms wrapped around her as if he could shield her from the last six years of pain. Victoria knelt beside them, stroking the child's hair, whispering promises she was determined to keep.

When the detective handed Julian the letter, his hands shook. The paper was yellowed with age, the handwriting unmistakably Eleanor's — the same elegant loops Victoria had seen in a thousand birthday cards and thank-you notes.

"Dear Victoria," the letter began. "You always had everything. The looks, the charm, the love of our parents. And then you married Julian and took the one thing I wanted most — the Rosewood name. I couldn't stand it. So I took the only thing you ever loved more than him. Your daughter."

Victoria read over Julian's shoulder, and by the time she reached the end, tears were streaming down her face.

"She sold Lily to this place," Victoria whispered. "She paid Mrs. Finch to keep her hidden. And she broke her leg to make sure no one would want to adopt her."

Julian tightened his hold on Lily. "She said it was a warning. She said if I ever tried to find you, she'd hurt you worse."

The detective cleared his throat. "Mr. Rosewood, there's something else. The birth certificate in the safe — it lists a different name."

Lily stirred in Julian's arms, looking up with those hazel eyes that were so like Victoria's. "My name is Lily," she said softly. "That's what the lady called me."

Julian kissed the top of her head. "Your real name is Rose," he said. "Rose Victoria Rosewood. That's what we named you the day you were born."

Lily blinked, and a small smile crossed her face. "Rose," she repeated. "I like that."

It took three months to finalize the adoption. The court ruled that Mrs. Finch's guardianship was fraudulent, and the forged documents were void. Eleanor's son, a man Julian had never trusted, was quietly removed from the trust's beneficiary list after a brief legal battle.

And on a warm spring morning, Julian and Victoria brought their daughter home.

They had converted the entire third floor of the Rosewood mansion into a nursery, complete with a canopy bed, shelves of books, and a window seat that overlooked the gardens. But the first thing Lily did when she walked through the front door was kneel down and touch the marble floor.

"It's warm," she said, looking up with wonder in her eyes.

Victoria knelt beside her. "It's heated," she said. "So you'll never be cold again."

Lily looked at her leg brace, then back at her mother. "Will I always have to wear this?"

Julian knelt too, his heart aching. "We're going to see the best doctors in the world," he said. "They're going to fix your leg. But even if you always need the brace, you'll always be our daughter. And we'll always love you."

Lily threw her arms around his neck, and Julian felt the last six years of grief finally begin to heal.

That night, they gathered in the library for a family dinner. The table was set with silver and crystal, and the staff had prepared all of Lily's favorites — macaroni and cheese, buttered rolls, and chocolate cake for dessert.

"This is the best day of my life," Lily said, her face covered in chocolate.

Victoria laughed, tears shining in her eyes. "For us too, sweetheart. For us too."

Julian watched his wife and daughter laughing together, and he knew that some wounds would take a lifetime to heal. But they would heal together. They would be a family — the way they were always meant to be.

As the evening light faded, Lily looked up at him with those hazel eyes.

"Daddy," she said, the word new and precious on her tongue. "Will you read me a story?"

Julian's throat tightened. "Always," he said. "Always."

And in that moment, sitting in the warm glow of the library, he knew that some stolen things could never truly be lost — they just had to be found again.
