Previously: A cruel foster father hides a little girl from visitors. But when a billionaire couple notices her embroidered blanket, the truth of who she really is shatters everything.

The Note Sewn Into the Hem

Carl’s face went pale. He lunged forward, but the officers were faster. They grabbed his arms and pinned him against the wall. “You’re under arrest for child endangerment and abuse,” one of them said, snapping handcuffs around his wrists.

But Carl didn’t struggle. He laughed, a low, ugly sound. “You think she’s yours?” he sneered, looking at Sebastian. “Wait until you read the note sewn inside the hem of that blanket.”

Sebastian’s eyes narrowed. He turned the blanket over, his fingers tracing the stitching along the hem. There, hidden in the folds, was a small folded paper, yellowed with age. He pulled it out and unfolded it.

Madeline read it over his shoulder, her breath catching. The note was handwritten in a shaky scrawl: “To whoever finds this — this child is not what she seems. She was left on my doorstep with a false birth certificate. Her real name is Eleanor Cole, daughter of Sebastian and Madeline Cole. I was paid to keep her hidden. I am sorry.”

Madeline screamed. She staggered back, her hand over her mouth. “Someone took her from us,” she sobbed. “They faked her death, they gave her away, they—” She couldn’t finish.

Sophie — Eleanor — looked up at them, confused and frightened. “I don’t understand,” she whispered. “My mommy sang me a song. She said I was special.” Her voice cracked. “But she left me with that man.”

Sebastian knelt down, his eyes glistening. “Your mommy was our nanny,” he said gently. “She took you when you were a baby. We thought you died in a fire. We searched for years.” He reached out and cupped her face. “We never stopped looking.”

Madeline sank to the floor, pulling Sophie into her arms. The child stiffened, then slowly melted into the embrace, burying her face in the woman’s shoulder. “Is it true?” she asked. “Are you really my mommy?”

“Yes, baby,” Madeline whispered. “Yes, we are.” She kissed Sophie’s forehead, her tears mingling with the child’s. “We’re taking you home.”

But Carl, still in handcuffs, let out another laugh. “You think it’s over? You don’t know the half of it. Your own family paid me to take her. Your brother, Sebastian. He wanted the inheritance for himself.”

Sebastian froze. His brother, Marcus, had always been jealous of his success, but this — this was beyond anything he could have imagined. He turned to the officers. “I need to make a phone call.”

Madeline looked up, her face streaked with tears and rage. “If Marcus did this,” she said, her voice shaking, “I’ll make him pay for every single day he stole from us.”

Sophie clung to her, small and trembling. “Don’t leave me,” she pleaded. “Please don’t leave me again.”

“Never,” Madeline promised. “We will never let you go again.”
