The Sculptor and the Shark

The air in the dockside tavern hung thick with the smell of brine, damp wood, and stale ale. Rain hammered relentlessly against the corrugated glass skylight, each drop a sharp percussion against the low, mournful creak of ancient timbers. Amber gas lanterns flickered, casting long, dancing shadows that writhed like specters across the rough-hewn walls. Chains, thick and rusted, dangled from the ceiling beams, remnants of a forgotten maritime past. In the center of this gloom, Armand Dubois, a man whose tailored charcoal cashmere coat seemed an affront to the squalor, stood with predatory stillness. His silvering hair was slicked back, his hawk-like nose sharp, and a sneer played on his lips, amplified by the glint of his gold signet ring.

He looked down at Grace, a young woman whose milky, sightless hazel eyes were fixed on something only she could perceive. Her simple linen smock, stained with the reddish hue of terracotta clay, spoke of honest labor. Her fingers, calloused and dusted with the same earth, were currently caressing the rough contours of an unbaked clay portrait bust. She sat at a scarred wooden workbench, a stark contrast to the menacing figure looming over her.
