Previously: On a freezing Christmas Eve, a wealthy man mocks a blind beggar, only to discover the beggar's humble mud sculpture hides a treasure beyond imagination, leading to a shocking downfall.

The Unveiling

His words struck a nerve, a raw, exposed cord of my ego. "You insolent street rat, give it to me!" I roared, lunging forward. My intention was to snatch the pathetic sculpture, to crush it and his spirit along with it. But the slick, wet leather of my glove offered no purchase on the icy slush. My balance faltered, my lunge becoming a clumsy stumble. My hand, flailing for purchase, slammed against the stone plinth of the boutique window. The impact sent a violent jolt through my arm, and a sickening crack echoed in the sudden, unnatural silence that seemed to fall between us.

The bust, struck with brutal force, fractured. A jagged line split the frozen outer shell of the clay.

Liam gasped, a soft hitch of breath, but a faint, knowing smile touched his chapped lips. It wasn't pain I saw in his eyes, but something else… something akin to anticipation. As the shattered gray clay sloughed away in heavy chunks, falling like dead skin into the snow, a gasp escaped my lips, a sound stolen by the wind. Nestled at the core of the broken sculpture, pulsing with an inner light, was a diamond. Not just any diamond, but one of impossible size and flawless clarity. It was a Golconda, I realized with a jolt of disbelief, easily over a hundred carats. Under the boutique's halogen lights, it exploded into a blinding spectacle of prismatic refractions and kaleidoscopic rainbow flares, dwarfing the treasures I peddled.

My mind reeled. "Good god..." I stammered, my voice barely a whisper. "That fire... what did you bury in the mud?!" Liam, his milky eyes wide and tranquil, bathed in the diamond's blazing, crystalline light, remained silent. But the knowing smile had grown, a subtle, serene expression that mocked my avarice. My carefully constructed world, built on wealth and status, began to crumble around me. The sheer, unadulterated value of the stone in front of me was a force of nature, a testament to a hidden reality I had never conceived of.
