Previously: When a homeless boy in the park whispered a terrifying secret about his daughter's blindness, David refused to believe it. But the truth behind his wife's actions was worse than any nightmare.

The Shadow in the Kitchen

David’s world spun. Cole’s words echoed in his mind like a recurring nightmare. His wife, Eleanor, had been a godsend since Olivia’s mother passed away. She was the one who prepared all of Olivia’s special meals, claiming that a strict, nutrient-rich diet was the only way to help her recover. Could Eleanor really be poisoning his only daughter?

Desperate for answers, David decided not to confront his wife immediately. Instead, he devised a plan. The following afternoon, he pretended to leave for a late-shift meeting at work. He walked out the front door, slammed it shut, but quietly slipped back inside through the basement entrance. Sneaking up the stairs, he hid in the pantry just off the kitchen, holding his breath.

Through the cracked pantry door, David watched Eleanor. She was preparing Olivia’s favorite chicken soup. Her movements were calm, almost methodical. But then, Eleanor reached into the very back of the spice cabinet and pulled out an unlabeled amber glass bottle. David’s heart leaped into his throat as he watched his wife grind several small blue pills into a fine powder and stir them directly into Olivia’s bowl.

"Sweetheart, lunchtime!" Eleanor called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.

A moment later, Olivia tapped her way into the kitchen with her white cane. David watched in agonizing suspense as Eleanor placed the bowl in front of the little girl. But before Olivia could take a single bite, David burst out of the pantry, slamming the door behind him.

"Stop! Don't touch that food!" David roared, his voice shaking with a mixture of rage and terror.

Eleanor gasped, dropping a spoon that clattered loudly against the tile floor. Her face drained of all color as she stared at her husband, realizing she had been caught red-handed. Olivia sat frozen, her hands trembling as she clutched the edge of the table.

"David! What are you doing home? You scared us!" Eleanor stammered, trying to mask her panic with a nervous laugh.
"What did you put in her food, Eleanor?" David demanded, stepping forward and snatching the amber bottle from the counter. "Tell me the truth, or I swear I will call the police right now!"
