The air hung thick and cold, heavy with the scent of salt and decay. Dawn was a grudging affair on the old harbor pier, the fog so dense it swallowed the world whole, leaving only the slick, dark wood beneath my feet and the mournful groan of the waves against the barnacle-encrusted pilings. A single kerosene lantern cast a sickly amber glow, barely piercing the gloom. It was in this ethereal, frozen landscape that Courtney Sterling found me, seated on a damp timber crate, my fingers coaxing life from a lump of clay. He was all sharp angles and expensive fabric, his charcoal cashmere overcoat a stark contrast to the rough, sea-worn surroundings. His disdain was a palpable thing, radiating from him like the cold.

The Mockery and the Mist

He loomed, a figure of pure, entitled arrogance. I could sense his impatience, the way his jaw clenched. Then, the crisp sound of paper, followed by a dismissive flick. A crumpled fifty-dollar bill landed on my tray, scattering a bit of dried clay. His voice, when it came, was laced with sneering condescension. "Take the fifty, old woman—it’s just crude harbor mud and worthless nostalgia," he spat, the words as sharp as shards of ice. I didn't flinch. My calloused, clay-stained fingertips continued their work, smoothing the rough contours of the bust, my sightless eyes gazing serenely through the mist. My silence, I knew, was more infuriating to him than any words could be.
