The Sculptor and the Dealer

The air in the old dockside tavern hung thick with the scent of aged wood, damp salt, and drying clay. Outside, a relentless rain drummed a mournful rhythm against the grimy skylight, each drop sending shimmering, distorted patterns across the rough-hewn timber walls. Heavy iron ship chains, relics of a bygone era, dangled from the exposed rafters, catching the warm, flickering amber light from the gas lanterns. It was a space steeped in atmosphere, a refuge for creation amidst the industrial decay.

Seated at a scarred oak table, his weathered face a roadmap of deep creases, was Tommy. At 68, his silver hair was a wild halo around a face dominated by milky-blue eyes, clouded by cataracts. His artisan hands, calloused and marked by years of working with clay, rested beside a rough, unbaked bust. He wore a simple, clay-dusted charcoal knit sweater, his fingers instinctively feeling the form taking shape under his touch.

Across from him stood Damian Knox, a man who radiated an almost palpable arrogance. In his early forties, his raven hair was slicked back immaculately, and his sharp features were framed by a tailored charcoal cashmere overcoat. A diamond-encrusted signet ring glinted on his finger as he surveyed the scene with an expression of smug, predatory condescension. He saw not an artist, but an opportunity.

With a sudden, aggressive motion, Damian slapped a crumpled fifty-dollar bill onto the wet table. The sharp smack cut through the drumming rain. He leaned forward, invading Tommy’s space, a smirk twisting his lips as his gaze raked over the crude clay bust. "Take the fifty dollars, old man," he sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. "It's pure charity for a worthless lump of river mud." Tommy, his sightless eyes calm and unblinking, remained silent, his head tilted slightly, listening only to the rain. His mouth was firmly closed, a picture of quiet dignity against the dealer's overt contempt.
