The Unseen Treasure

The late autumn drizzle fell like a shroud over the city, turning the cobblestone streets outside Sterling Academy into a slick, dark mirror. Amber carriage lanterns cast a weak, shimmering glow through the mist, barely illuminating the imposing wrought-iron gates. A biting wind whistled through the railings, carrying the mournful scent of wet leaves and distant traffic. It was a scene of stark, almost cruel beauty, a stage set for a drama that was about to unfold.

Seated on a weathered wooden crate, Sarah, a young sculptor with eyes that saw not the world but the art within it, shivered. Her fingers, stained with grey clay and clad in fingerless gloves, rested protectively on the rough terracotta bust between her knees. Her frail frame was lost in an oversized woolen sweater, a stark contrast to the predatory elegance of the man who loomed over her. Courtney Sterling, a renowned art dealer of 42, stood under the sole protection of his black umbrella, a figure of arrogant power in his charcoal cashmere overcoat and silk scarf. His face, sharp and aquiline, was set in a cruel sneer.

"Take the fifty, girl—it’s pure charity for a pile of worthless street mud."

He snapped a crumpled fifty-dollar bill between his manicured fingers, the sound sharp and dismissive in the damp air. He slapped the money onto the crate beside the bust. Sarah remained silent, her unseeing milky-hazel eyes staring resolutely ahead, her jaw tight with a defiance that radiated from her very core. The bill lay there, a symbol of his contempt, a paltry offer for what she knew was so much more.
