The rain hammered against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the ultra-elite Cannes art gallery, a furious symphony played out against the violent, slate-gray Mediterranean waves crashing below. Inside, the warm glow of halogen tracks cast long, dramatic shadows across the pristine Thassos marble floors, turning the minimalist space into a stage of stark contrasts. In the center of this opulent setting stood Jason Vance, a man who embodied cold, sharp arrogance. His raven hair was slicked back, his jaw chiseled and shadowed by designer stubble. Clad in a flawless charcoal wool Tom Ford suit, the platinum gleam of his Rolex Submariner a silent testament to his wealth, he exuded an air of untouchable superiority. He towered over Ruth, a blind master sculptor, her serene face a landscape of dignified lines, her eyes clouded with milky cataracts. Silver braids framed her face, and her indigo tunic, dusted with terracotta, spoke of her craft. Her calloused, clay-stained hands rested gently on a rough, unglazed clay bust, a stark contrast to the gallery's polished perfection.

The Insult

Jason’s sneer was palpable as he looked down at Ruth. With a casual, contemptuous flick of his wrist, he tossed a crumpled fifty-dollar bill. It landed not at her feet, but directly into the wet clay at the base of the bust. "Fifty bucks is pure charity for lumpy seaside mud, old woman—take it before I smash it into dust," he drawled, his voice dripping with mock pity. Ruth, however, remained silent, her lips pressed firmly together. She tilted her head slightly, as if listening intently to the storm outside, or perhaps to the man before her. A subtle, enigmatic smirk, almost imperceptible, played on her weathered lips as her fingers stroked the rough clay. It was a look that hinted at depths Jason Vance could never fathom.
