The Unveiling

Damian’s hand closed around the clay bust, his impatience a tangible force in the tense courtroom. He expected to feel only the rough texture of dried earth, perhaps the gritty resistance of cheap clay. He was ready to discard it, to dismiss it as worthless, just as he had dismissed me. But as his fingers tightened, the brittle outer shell, the carefully sculpted facade, began to shear away. A sharp, calcified crunch resonated through the sudden silence. Thick slabs of unfired terracotta broke off, falling onto the polished mahogany like shards of brittle bone. Beneath the crumbling facade, something blindingly brilliant began to emerge.

“Wait… what the hell is inside this mud?!”

Knox’s voice was a choked gasp, the arrogance wiped clean from his face, replaced by stunned disbelief. His predatory smirk had contorted into a mask of dawning horror. The dull grey clay had given way to an immense, raw 100-carat Golconda diamond. Its uncut crystalline facets exploded with blinding prismatic refractions, fiery cerulean highlights dancing under the courtroom’s ornate chandeliers. It pulsed with light, a captured star set free from its earthen prison. My scarred fingers, guided by a lifetime of touch, delicately cradled the brilliant crystalline nucleus. I felt its perfect, cool facets, its immense weight, a tactile serenity that belied the chaos erupting around me.

The courtroom erupted. Stunned gasps rippled through the spectators, growing into a wave of bewildered uproar. Damian stumbled backward, his manicured hands shaking violently as the crumpled fifty-dollar bill fluttered uselessly to the floor. Cold sweat beaded on his forehead, his sharp jawline now clenched in a rictus of shock. “That’s… that’s the lost Golconda Star… it’s worth over fifty million dollars!” he stammered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and dawning avarice. He stared at the diamond, then at me, his eyes wide with a ruinous, paralyzing realization. He had seen only mud; I had felt a fortune.
