Previously: A sneering art dealer offers a pittance for a sculptor's work, only to discover the clay hides a priceless gem. The encounter escalates, revealing deeper secrets and testing true value.

The Reckoning

The frantic energy drained from Carter Ross, leaving him slack and trembling. Arthur’s grip remained firm, a silent testament to a power far older and more profound than any corporate security system. The blinding light of the Golconda diamond seemed to pulse with a quiet intensity, illuminating the stark contrast between the two men.

Arthur: "Keep your fifty dollars, Carter—use it to buy yourself a soul."

With a smooth, deliberate motion, Arthur released Carter’s wrist. He then took the crumpled fifty-dollar bill Carter had so arrogantly thrown down earlier and pressed it firmly into the dealer’s limp, suddenly clammy palm. The gesture was loaded with a devastating, whisper-cold finality. As Carter stared, uncomprehending, at the bill now clutched in his hand, Arthur smoothly slid the magnificent diamond into the deep, worn pocket of his tweed coat. It disappeared without a sound, a secret held safe.

Arthur turned towards the exit, leaving Carter alone amidst the flickering amber lights and the dying glow of the holographic displays. The dealer collapsed back into his executive chair, a broken man. Tears of humiliated shock welled along his lower eyelids, tracing clean paths through the expensive polish of his skin. The diamond was gone, his arrogance exposed, his wealth meaningless in the face of true legacy and quiet strength. He was left with nothing but a worthless piece of paper and the crushing weight of his own soullessness.

True value cannot be bought; it can only be recognized.
