Previously: A powerful art dealer confronts a blind sculptor in a barn during a tornado, only to discover a priceless diamond hidden within his art. Greed turns to terror as a deadly game of cat and mouse begins.

The Reckoning

The sight of the Golconda, blazing with an almost sentient light, ignited a firestorm within Vivian. Her carefully cultivated composure evaporated, replaced by a frantic, clawing desperation. She lunged across the splintering workbench, her manicured fingers, usually instruments of delicate negotiation and appraisal, now scrabbling through the airborne straw, desperately reaching for the radiant gem. The polished art dealer vanished, leaving only a primal creature consumed by avarice. "I'll transfer ten million right now—wire verified, please, God, give it to me!" she stammered, her voice a breathless, trembling plea. Arthur, however, remained unperturbed. With infuriating serenity, he lifted the blazing diamond, turning it just beyond her desperate grasp. He slipped the crumpled fifty-dollar bill she had so contemptuously offered into the pocket of his fraying cardigan, a gesture of profound, almost mocking, dismissal.

As Vivian’s frantic energy peaked, the ancient barn doors at the far end of the structure were violently blasted inward. They didn’t just open; they were torn from their hinges, revealing the terrifying tableau of the storm’s heart. A black funnel cloud, a monstrous vortex of destruction, churned across the field behind them, illuminated by strobing flashes of electric violet lightning. It was a sight of apocalyptic grandeur, a stark reminder of the raw power that Arthur had invoked, or perhaps, controlled. Arthur cradled the blinding diamond against his chest, his lips curving into a faint, chilling smile. "Keep your millions, Vivian... your private escort is already at the door." The words, delivered with a quiet finality, sent a new wave of terror through Vivian, colder and more profound than the storm itself. Who was this escort? What did he mean? As she looked past Arthur, towards the terrifying maelstrom framed by the ruined doorway, she saw them – two figures, cloaked and indistinct, emerging from the churning chaos. They were not rescuers. They were something else entirely. Vivian’s knees buckled, her legs unable to support the crushing weight of her terror as she sank to the dirt floor. Tears of horror welled, blurring the terrifying scene as her chin quivered in helpless paralysis. The storm outside raged, but the true tempest was now within her.

The diamond was hers for fifty dollars, or so she thought. But Arthur’s final words echoed in the roaring wind: "Some treasures are not meant to be owned, Vivian. They are merely meant to be protected." Her greed had blinded her more effectively than Arthur’s cataracts ever could.
