The biting autumn drizzle did little to dampen the imposing presence of Northwood Academy’s wrought-iron gates. Glistening asphalt mirrored the amber glow of streetlamps, a stark contrast to the sodden russet leaves plastered to the granite curbs. For Lily Evans, a thirty-year-old blind combat veteran, the urban chill was a familiar discomfort, her senses heightened to the subtle symphony of the city – the distant wail of police sirens, the sharp slap of raindrops against metal. Her military poise was evident even in the tailored charcoal wool pea coat, her damp, silver-streaked dark hair framing high cheekbones. Her clouded irises remained unblinking, beaded with rain, as her right hand rested lightly on a white carbon-fiber cane.

The Ambush

Suddenly, the guttural snarl of an engine and the violent *clack* of a Glock slide being racked shattered the relative calm. Marcus, a thirty-six-year-old bank robbery crew leader, burst from a getaway SUV. Clad in a water-resistant tactical windbreaker and Kevlar gloves, his lower face concealed by a soaked neoprene balaclava, only his feral hazel eyes were exposed. He advanced, the pungent scent of gun oil and damp cordite assaulting Lily’s senses through the rain.

“Don't scream, blind girl, or your brains paint that gate!”

Lily remained motionless, her jaw clenching. Her nostrils flared, her mind processing the tactical recognition. She didn’t scream. Instead, her shoulders subtly dropped, her body instinctively shifting into a combat-ready stance. Marcus lunged, aggressively jamming the cold steel muzzle toward her temple. Water droplets sprayed from his sodden sleeve. Lily calmly tilted her head, a two-millimeter adjustment, tracking the rush of displaced air and the telltale friction of rubber soles against wet granite. An eerie tranquility smoothed her features as she spoke with icy, whisper-quiet venom:

“You reek of cheap Break-Free CLP oil and panic.”

Marcus froze, his predatory hazel eyes widening in startled disbelief as his trigger finger twitched. The tables, it seemed, were already beginning to turn.
