The Tables Turn
The brief moment of stunned silence that followed my whispered words was broken only by the relentless drumming of rain against the glass. Vance, momentarily thrown, recovered his bravado. He saw his chance to regain control, to assert his dominance. With a surge of brute force, he lunged, the pistol aimed not at my head this time, but swinging in a vicious arc, intended to shatter my skull.
But years of combat, of reacting faster than thought, were ingrained in my muscle memory. As his arm swung down, my left palm shot out, deflecting his wrist upward with a sharp, resonant clap. The pistol flew harmlessly past my ear. In the same fluid motion, my graphite cane, light yet incredibly strong, whipped into action. It struck Vance’s right kneecap with a sickening, splintering crunch. The sound was horrific, even over the storm.

"Gah! What the hell—how did you—!" Vance shrieked, his voice cracking with agony.
His leg buckled instantly, his massive frame collapsing onto the marble floor. His carefully constructed aggression dissolved into a raw display of pain and shock. His face, no longer hidden by the balaclava he’d momentarily pulled back in his lunge, contorted in agony. The arrogance was gone, replaced by pure, unadulterated fear.
As he fell, I continued the kinetic motion, my grip tightening on his now-useless wrist. With a brutal, precise twist, I wrenched the pistol from his grasp. It felt unnervingly familiar in my hand. In a blindingly fast series of movements, I stripped the magazine, the small metal rectangle clattering across the marble, and racked the slide, ejecting the live 9mm round. It spun in the air for a fraction of a second before I caught it, the brass casing cool against my palm.
"Thirty years in Delta Force... I don't need eyes to break a thief," I stated, my voice a low, gravelly growl.
Vance lay on the cold floor, his leg bent at an unnatural angle, his body wracked with shock. He couldn't speak, couldn't move, his jaw hanging slack in utter disbelief. He had come to rob and terrorize, but he had stumbled into a nightmare of his own making. His men, however, were still out there. Waiting. And they wouldn't know their leader had been so spectacularly neutralized. The real danger was about to escalate.
