Previously: A blind combat veteran's chilling composure and lethal skills are tested when a hardened heist leader confronts her in a deserted hotel lobby during a raging storm. Can she survive?

Calculated Calm

The harsh lightning flashed again, freezing Vance’s menacing posture. This time, the extreme close-up revealed the intricate details of Clara’s face – pale, motionless, with tiny water droplets clinging to her wool coat. Her milky-blue eyes remained unfocused, serene despite the imminent threat. Vance’s heavy breath stirred a loose strand of her hair, a sign of his own rising anxiety. He expected fear, a scream, anything but the icy composure that emanated from her. Clara’s voice, when it came, was as sharp and cold as glacial ice.

"Three pounds of trigger pressure, worn slide spring, and you're stepping heavy on your left knee."

Vance froze. His exposed hazel eyes widened in paralyzed shock. The confident swagger evaporated, replaced by a dawning realization of his miscalculation. A single, cold bead of sweat traced a path down his temple, a testament to the sudden shift in power. He had underestimated his opponent, a fatal flaw in his line of work. The storm outside seemed to mirror the turmoil erupting within him. He snarled, a guttural sound of frustration and rage, lunging forward with the weapon in a desperate, primal move.

"What the hell—"

But Clara was faster. In a blinding burst of authentic kinetic velocity, she pivoted inside his guard. Her carbon-fiber cane, a tool she wielded with deadly precision, whipped across Vance’s forearm with a loud, sharp crack. Simultaneously, her left hand locked like a vise onto the pistol slide, her right palm striking his wrist joint with brutal, bone-jarring force. The muzzle, inches from her head moments before, was redirected skyward. An accidental gunshot detonated into the ornate ceiling, showering the polished floor with plaster dust. Vance gasped, his world tilting violently as the weapon was wrested from his grasp. Clara, her jaw locked in fierce military discipline, her unseeing gaze eerily steady, had turned the tables with breathtaking efficiency.
