The Blind Veteran's Edge

The extreme close-up captured the weathered landscape of Grace’s face, the faint shrapnel scars stark beneath the stark lighting. Her flared nostrils flared, drawing in the sharp scent of burnt gun oil and the omnipresent dust. Tiny motes of dust drifted lazily across her unblinking, milky eyes. Kovak, hidden behind his mask, watched her, a bewildered irritation growing as he realized she wasn't reacting as expected. A drop of cold sweat traced a path into his lash line.

“Sub-compact slide, wet boots dragging left... you have three seconds to drop it,” Grace’s voice was an icy rasp, devoid of emotion.

Kovak recoiled, his pupils dilating behind the balaclava. How could she possibly know? He hadn't made a sound, hadn't given any obvious tells. Or so he thought. He took a hesitant step forward, his knuckles blanching as his trigger finger tightened, neck veins bulging with strain. He was losing his nerve, his carefully constructed bravado crumbling under the weight of the unknown.

“You’re blind, bitch! You can’t even see the muzzle!” he barked, a hysterical, mocking edge to his voice.

Grace’s breath hitched, a tiny, almost imperceptible intake of air. Her jaw muscles clenched, her focus narrowing to the microscopic mechanical friction of the sear engaging within his weapon. She knew the exact moment he committed. The air crackled with anticipation, the deep ticking of the clockwork a relentless countdown. Kovak was coiled, ready to pull the trigger, convinced of his imminent victory against a defenseless opponent. He couldn't comprehend that her perceived vulnerability was her greatest weapon, her lack of sight a gateway to a heightened sense of awareness that far surpassed his own.
