The grand hall of the Sullivan-Carter manor was a masterclass in architectural opulence. High-gloss cream marble tiles, patterned with elegant dark grey squares, stretched toward a sweeping white marble staircase. Overhead, a massive crystal chandelier cast a brilliant glow across the space, but the atmosphere inside the room was ice-cold. Emily Carter stood in the center of the hall, her shoulders hunched. Dressed in her dark navy housekeeping uniform with its crisp white apron, she felt entirely out of place beneath the judgmental gazes of the city's elite.

The Accusation

Standing opposite Emily was Megan Sullivan, her employer, radiating absolute fury. Megan’s dark hair was pulled back into a severe chignon, and her emerald green silk dress seemed to shimmer with her anger. On the polished floor between them lay a sturdy, dark brown leather duffel bag. It was Emily’s only real possession, containing the few keepsakes she had left of her late mother.

Emily’s eyes welled with tears. “I didn’t take it, ma'am! I swear I’ve never even touched your jewelry!” she pleaded, her voice trembling with desperation. The crowd of formal onlookers whispered among themselves, their faces a mix of concern and harsh scrutiny.

Before the confrontation could escalate further, James Carter stepped forward. Impeccably dressed in a charcoal pinstripe suit, his commanding presence instantly silenced the room. He looked down at the duffel bag, then at Emily’s terrified face.

“Open the bag,” James commanded, his voice calm but absolute.

With trembling fingers, Emily knelt and fumbled with the brass zipper. As the leather parted, a gasp rippled through the crowd. Resting on top of her folded clothes was Megan’s missing diamond necklace, its jewels glistening under the chandelier. But right beside it lay a small, tarnished silver locket.

James froze. His eyes locked onto the silver locket, and his face drained of all color.

“Wait,” James whispered, his authoritative demeanor completely shattering.
