Previously: My daughter pointed at a stranger and said, 'Daddy, he looks like me!' Then the boy pulled out a photo I thought was lost forever. It was the moment my past came back to destroy us.

The truth hit me square in the chest.

Maria stepped forward, her hand reaching for Ethan's shoulder. 'I'm sorry,' she said, her voice cracking. 'I didn't know how to tell you. I didn't know if you'd even care.'

I looked from her to the boy, my son, and felt the ground shift beneath my feet. 'Why didn't you tell me? All these years—'

'I tried,' she cut in, her eyes flashing with old anger. 'I called your office. I left messages. But you were already married by then, and your wife's assistant kept telling me to stop calling, that you had a new life, that I should leave you alone.'

My jaw tightened. Claire's assistant. Of course. The woman who screened every call, who prided herself on protecting my time. She'd never mentioned a Maria. Never mentioned anything.

I wanted to be furious, but the anger had nowhere to go. Because the truth was, I'd moved on. I'd married Claire, had Lily, and buried the memory of a mistake I thought I'd escaped.

But here was Ethan, proof that the past doesn't stay buried.

Lily tugged at my sleeve. 'Daddy, who is that lady? Why does that boy look like me?'

I knelt down, my heart pounding. 'Lily, I need you to be brave. This is… this is Ethan. He might be your brother.'

Her eyes went wide. 'I have a brother?'

Maria knelt beside Ethan, wiping a tear from his cheek. 'I'm sorry, baby. I should have told you sooner. But your dad didn't know about you. I thought it was better this way.'

'Better?' I stood up, my voice rising. 'Better for whom? You kept my son from me for seven years. Seven years, Maria. I could have been there. I should have been there.'

'You would have chosen your new family,' she shot back. 'You always did what was easy, Sebastian. You wanted a perfect life, and I wasn't part of that picture. But Ethan needed a father, and I had to decide whether to fight for you or protect him. I chose him.'

Her words stung because they were true. I'd never been brave about the hard things. I'd let Claire's assistant handle my calls, let my career define me, let life happen to me. And I'd let Maria slip away without a second thought.

But now, standing in front of my son, I couldn't hide anymore.

'I need to tell Claire,' I said, my voice barely above a whisper. 'She deserves to know.'

Maria shook her head. 'No, Sebastian. You can't. She'll hate you. She'll hate us. Ethan will be caught in the middle of a war.'

'He's already in the middle,' I said. 'He's been in the middle his whole life.'

I pulled out my phone, my fingers shaking. Claire was at home, probably making dinner, thinking we were just at the park. She had no idea her world was about to shatter.

I dialed her number. It rang once. Twice. Three times.

She answered, her voice warm. 'Hey, love. Are you guys coming home soon? I made spaghetti.'

I opened my mouth, but the words wouldn't come. I looked at Ethan, at his small, hopeful face, and I knew I couldn't keep this secret any longer.

'Claire, I need you to come to the park. Now. There's something I need to tell you.'

There was a pause. 'Is Lily okay? Are you okay?'

'We're fine. But Claire, please. Just come.'

I hung up before she could ask more questions. Maria stepped back, pulling Ethan close. 'I should go. I shouldn't be here when she arrives.'

'No,' I said, grabbing her arm. 'You stay. This is your story too. You don't get to run away anymore.'

She looked at me, her eyes glistening. 'You don't get to tell me what I can and can't do, Sebastian. Not after everything.'

But she stayed. And when Claire's car pulled into the parking lot, I watched my wife step out, still smiling, still unaware.

When she saw Maria and Ethan, the smile faded. She walked over slowly, her eyes moving from the boy to the photograph in my hand.

'Sebastian,' she said, her voice cold. 'Who is this?'

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. Lily ran to her, crying, 'Mommy, I have a brother!'

Claire looked at me, and I saw the betrayal settle in her eyes like ice. 'A brother? Sebastian, what is she talking about?'

And in that moment, I knew that no matter what I said, nothing would ever be the same again.
