A Desperate Encounter in the Field

The heavy gray clouds hung low over the open fields of Oregon, casting a somber light over the gravel turnout where the Iron Brotherhood had parked their motorcycles. Ryder, a rugged man with a graying beard and a leather vest worn thin by years on the road, was adjusting his side mirror when a sudden movement in the tall grass caught his eye. A small figure was scrambling through the brush, running with desperate, clumsy speed toward the group of imposing men.

It was a little boy, no older than six, wearing a faded plaid shirt and dusty jeans. As he reached the clearing, his foot caught on a hidden root. He tripped, tumbling hard onto the damp grass. Ryder instinctively stepped forward, but before he could reach out, the boy scrambled back to his feet, clutching a crude toy motorcycle made of carved wood to his chest.

The boy looked up at Ryder, his large brown eyes wide with a mixture of terror and hope. Walking right past the other towering bikers, he held the wooden toy up to Ryder.

"Please sir, buy it," the boy pleaded, his voice cracking with emotion.

The field fell silent. Ryder knelt down on the damp ground, bringing himself to the child's level. He gently took the toy from the boy's trembling hands. The carving was rough, but it was a perfect miniature replica of a vintage chopper—the exact model Ryder rode.

"Who made this?" Ryder asked, his rough voice softening.

The boy wiped a tear from his dirty cheek with his sleeve.

"My dad," he sobbed, his shoulders shaking.

Ryder looked closely at the boy's face, sensing an eerie familiarity in his features. Something stirred deep in his chest, a memory long buried.

"What's his name?" Ryder asked softly.

The boy's lips trembled, and fresh tears spilled down his cheeks as he delivered a line that shattered Ryder's world.

"He said if he died, I should find the biker who is my father."
