Previously: When seven-year-old Liam begged a cold-hearted bakery clerk for stale bread to feed his crying little sister, he never expected a wealthy stranger in a wool coat to change their lives forever.

A Sudden Revelation

Jessica scrambled to fulfill the order, her hands shaking as she packed boxes of croissants, sourdough loaves, and delicate pastries. Thomas ignored her frantic movements, guiding Liam and Mia to a plush velvet booth in the warmest corner of the bakery. He waved his hand, ordering the kitchen to bring out two large mugs of warm milk and plates of thick turkey sandwiches immediately.

Liam watched the food arrive as if it were a mirage. He carefully fed Mia first, tearing off soft pieces of bread for her tiny hands, before taking a bite himself. Thomas watched them with a mixture of intense sadness and curiosity. The older man leaned forward, his voice gentle.

"Where are your parents, son?"

Thomas asked.

"Why are you out here alone in the cold?"

Liam swallowed hard, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He tried to stand tall, wanting to protect his sister.

"Our mommy died three months ago,"

Liam whispered, holding Mia's hand.

"We got kicked out of our apartment because we couldn't pay the rent. I promised Mommy I would always take care of Mia, but it's hard to find food."

Thomas felt a sharp pang in his chest. His heart raced as a strange, desperate suspicion began to form in his mind. The boy's eyes—they were a striking, familiar shade of forest green. He had seen those eyes before.

"What was your mother's name, Liam?"

Thomas asked, his voice barely a whisper.

"Her name was Clara,"

Liam replied.

"Clara Vance. She used to sing us to sleep."

Thomas gasped, his face turning pale. The luxurious bakery seemed to spin around him. Clara Vance was his estranged daughter. Ten years ago, after a bitter argument about her career choices, Clara had walked out of his life, changing her last name to her mother's maiden name. Thomas had spent the last five years employing private investigators to find her, desperate to apologize and make amends. He never imagined she was gone—or that her children were starving on the streets.
