Previously: When eleven-year-old Leo walked into the grand bank with a gold envelope from his late grandmother, he only wanted to check his balance. Instead, the teller panicked, trying to kick him out.

The Vanishing Fortune

The rapid clicking of the keyboard suddenly stopped. Arthur stared at the screen, his face draining of all color. The digital ledger in front of him displayed a balance that should have been impossible for an eleven-year-old boy to possess. More importantly, it showed a series of recent, unauthorized transactions that Arthur knew all too well—because he was the one who had made them.

"There must be some mistake," Arthur stammered, his polished teller persona completely crumbling. "This account... it doesn't exist anymore. It was closed. You need to leave so I can assist actual clients."

He tried to slide the golden envelope under a stack of brochures on his desk, hoping to hide the evidence. But Officer Davis, who had been watching Arthur’s erratic behavior with growing suspicion, stepped forward. His heavy boots clicked sharply against the marble floor.

"Sir, the boy asked for his balance," Officer Davis said, his voice deep and authoritative. "And I suggest you hand back that envelope. It doesn't belong to the bank."

Arthur swallowed hard, his hand hovering over the shredder slot beneath his desk. He knew that if anyone looked too closely at the gold envelope, his entire life would be over. For the past three years, he had been systematically skimming money from the accounts of elderly depositors who rarely checked their statements. Leo's grandmother, Clara, had been his primary target. When she passed away two weeks ago, Arthur thought he was finally safe. He had transferred the remaining two hundred and fifty thousand dollars into a dummy corporation under his control.

But he hadn't counted on Clara's foresight. She had kept her own physical ledger, sealed inside the very gold envelope Arthur now held.

"I am going to call security if you don't step back," Arthur threatened, his voice cracking as he reached for the silent alarm under his desk.
