The moment the baby’s warm, soft fingers brushed against the fabric of George’s trousers, a shockwave of intense heat surged through his knee. George gasped, his hands instantly gripping the armrests of his wheelchair. For three long years, his lower body had been a cold, silent void. But now, a tingling sensation—like a thousand tiny sparks of electricity—rushed down his calves and into his toes. It was an overwhelming, terrifying, and beautiful feeling.

With a trembling breath, George did something he hadn't attempted in years. He leaned forward, bearing weight on his feet. His muscles, long dormant, twitched with sudden vitality. Slowly, agonizingly, George stood up. The crowd on the sidewalk seemed to blur as he held himself upright for three glorious, heart-stopping seconds. Tears welled in his eyes before his knees buckled, and he collapsed back into the safety of his wheelchair, panting heavily.

"How... how is this possible?" George breathed, looking at his hands, then at the baby. "Who are you? Who sent you?"

Lucas wiped a tear from his dirty cheek, his shoulders shaking. He reached inside the baby's woolen blanket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver locket that hung around the infant's neck. He held it out for George to see.

George’s heart stopped. He recognized that locket instantly. It was an heirloom he had gifted to his daughter, Clara, on her sixteenth birthday. He had cut Clara out of his life five years ago after a bitter argument about her life choices, ignoring her desperate letters and pridefully refusing to help her when she fell into poverty.

"My name is Lucas," the boy sobbed. "And this is my baby sister, Lily. Our mom... she passed away last month. But before she died, she told me to find you. She said your heart was broken, and that Lily's love could heal anything."
