Previously: When George's daughter Harper was diagnosed with a rare, blinding illness, his wife Julia became her dedicated caregiver. But at a family lunch, an unexpected young guest revealed a terrifying truth.

A History of Dark Secrets

George’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stared at the chemical label on the bottle. It wasn't Harper’s prescribed medication; it was a potent, concentrated sedative mixed with heavy industrial eye-dilating drops. He demanded answers, but Julia remained silent, her face a pale mask of guilt. Sensing the immediate danger, George scooped Harper up, grabbed Oliver, and rushed them to the nearest hospital.

The emergency room doctors acted quickly. Within hours, the toxicology reports confirmed the worst: Harper’s system was loaded with dangerous levels of sedatives. The eye drops had caused temporary, severe pupil dilation, perfectly mimicking progressive blindness. If the poisoning had continued, the damage to her optic nerves would have become permanent.

While George sat by Harper's bedside, weeping with a mixture of relief and fury, the attending pediatrician pulled him aside. The doctor’s face was grim.

"George, we ran Julia’s name through our medical database," the doctor whispered. "This isn't her first time doing this. Ten years ago, in another state, she had a husband and a young son. The son died of a mysterious illness, and Julia collected a massive life insurance payout."

George’s blood ran cold. Julia had married him not out of love, but to slowly poison his daughter and claim the multi-million dollar trust fund he had established for Harper’s future. Fuelled by rage, George called the police and rushed back to his estate to confront his wife.

But when he arrived, the house was empty. The safe had been cleaned out, and Julia was gone. On the kitchen counter lay a chilling note: "You think you won, George? I still have the keys to your cabin. And I took something else with me."

Before George could process the threat, his phone rang. It was a video call from an unknown number. On the screen, Julia’s face appeared, her eyes wild with madness. In the backseat of her speeding car, bound and terrified, was young Oliver.

"If you call the police, George, the boy pays the price," she hissed before hanging up.
