Previously: When nineteen-year-old Clara felt her paralyzed legs tingle after a poor boy washed her feet, her father tried to drive him away—until a silver medallion exposed a shocking family secret.

The Secret of the Willow

The silence that fell over the gravel driveway was deafening. Richard stared at the silver medallion cradled in Toby’s calloused hand. The piece was unmistakable—an antique silver pendant engraved with a weeping willow, a family heirloom that Richard had not seen in nearly two decades. His face turned pale, and his hands began to tremble as he reached out, though he could not bring himself to touch it.

"Where did you get this?" Richard whispered, his powerful voice suddenly reduced to a weak gasp. "Who was your mother?"
"Her name was Sarah Jennings," Toby said, his voice steady despite the tears shining in his eyes. "She passed away last month. Before she died, she gave me this and told me to find you. She said you were the only one who could help me understand."

The name Sarah Jennings seemed to strike Richard like a physical blow. He stumbled backward, clutching the hood of his car for support. Clara watched in utter bewilderment, her physical miracle momentarily eclipsed by the heavy, suffocating tension between her father and the stable boy. She had never seen her father, a man of absolute control, look so entirely broken.

"Sarah..." Richard murmured, burying his face in his hands. "She... she never told me. She promised she would stay away."

Clara gripped her crutches, forcing herself to stand, her newly awakened nerves tingling with a mixture of physical sensation and emotional dread. "Dad, what is going on?" she demanded. "Who is Sarah? What does this mean?"

Richard looked up, his eyes red and filled with a lifetime of hidden regret. He looked at Toby, seeing the boy's curly hair and familiar jawline with a sudden, painful clarity. The truth could no longer be hidden behind wealth and estate walls. "Toby," Richard choked out, "Sarah was the love of my life before I married your mother, Clara. But my family forced us apart because she was poor. I never knew... I never knew she was pregnant when she left."

I never knew she was pregnant when she left."
