Previously: Dr. Mercer presented a fake heir to the Mercer fortune, but the barefoot boy in the corner knew the secret lullaby. When the locket opened, everything changed.

The Court Order Landed Like a Bomb, and Dr. Mercer's Smile Returned

The security officers had Dr. Mercer pinned, but he was still laughing — a wet, gurgling sound that made Leo's stomach churn. "You think a torn contract means anything? I have the law on my side."

Dominic stood, shielding Leo with his body. "You have nothing. You're under arrest."

"Check the date," Dr. Mercer sneered. "That court order I filed last month? It gives me custody of the Mercer estate — and the child — until the inheritance dispute is settled. You, Mr. Mercer, are legally bound to comply."

Camille's face went pale. "That's absurd. You're a trustee, not a family member."

"I'm a Mercer cousin," Dr. Mercer shot back, his voice dripping with venom. "And I have proof of lineage. The boy in white is my nephew. Your true son is a sickly little cripple who's better off in a home."

Leo flinched at the word "cripple," but he didn't look away. He'd learned long ago that looking away was how you lost.

Dominic's jaw tightened. "You will not speak about my son that way."

"Your son?" Dr. Mercer laughed. "You haven't proven that. The locket is pretty, but it's not a DNA test. And while we wait for the court to sort this out, I hold legal guardianship over the boy. The officers will follow the law."

The security officers exchanged uneasy glances. One of them — the younger one with a soft face — looked at Leo with something like pity.

"Sir," the officer said to Dominic, "the court order is valid. We have to take the child into protective custody."

Leo's heart slammed against his ribs. Protective custody. He knew what that meant. It meant another orphanage. Another room full of cold beds and crueler kids. It meant losing Dominic and Camille — the parents he'd only just found.

"No," he whispered. "Please."

Camille broke free from her husband's side and knelt in front of Leo, her silk scarf brushing his cheek. "Listen to me, sweetheart. We will fix this. I promise you."

"Promises are cheap," Dr. Mercer spat. "Take the boy."

The officer reached for Leo's arm, and Leo's instinct kicked in. He twisted away, his bare feet sliding on the marble, and darted behind the mahogany desk. His hand brushed the torn contract — the one Dominic had ripped in half — and he saw the tiny printed words at the bottom: "The child shall remain in the custody of the Mercer family until legal paternity is established."

"Wait," Leo said, his voice steady despite the trembling in his hands. "The contract says I stay with the family."

Dr. Mercer's eyes widened. "That's a forgery!"

"You forged it," Leo said, and for the first time, he felt the power of his own words. "You made that contract to put the imposter in. But it says 'the child' — and that's me. I'm the child. And it says I stay."

Dominic stared at Leo, a slow smile spreading across his face. "The boy's right. The contract — even though it's forged — grants custody to the family. And I am the family."

Dr. Mercer's face turned purple. "You can't —"

"I can," Dominic said, stepping forward. "And I will. Officer, arrest this man for fraud, attempted kidnapping, and forging legal documents. I'll have my lawyers file charges before the sun sets."

The officers hesitated, but the older one nodded. "Sir, we'll need to verify the documents, but the boy's claim holds for now. Dr. Mercer, you're coming with us."

As they cuffed him, Dr. Mercer's laughter died, replaced by a low growl. "This isn't over. You'll regret this, Mercer. I have connections. I have secrets. And I know things about your precious family that will destroy you all."

Dominic's face hardened. "Take him away."

But as the doors closed behind them, Leo felt a chill crawl up his spine. Dr. Mercer's words hung in the air like smoke.

Camille wrapped her arms around Leo, and for a moment, he felt safe. But then he saw the look in Dominic's eyes — a look he didn't understand. It was fear.

"Dad?" Leo said, the word strange on his tongue. "What did he mean?"

Dominic knelt down, his hands on Leo's shoulders. "He means there are secrets in this family, son. Secrets that could hurt us. But I promise you — I will protect you from all of them."

Leo wanted to believe him. He wanted to trust the warmth in those gray-green eyes. But his mother had taught him one thing: secrets have a way of surfacing, and when they do, they can shatter everything.

The lullaby played softly from the locket in his hand, and Leo knew — this was only the beginning.
