The Breath of Life

The pallbearers hesitated, looking at each other in sheer disbelief. Katherine gasped, grabbing Henry’s arm with a frantic, claw-like grip. “Henry, no! This is madness! You’re desecrating our daughter’s memory because of the delusions of a street urchin! Please, let her rest in peace!” Her voice was shrill, bordering on hysterical, which only fueled the sudden, terrible suspicion blooming in Henry's chest.

“Pry it open,” Henry repeated, his voice leaving no room for argument. “Now.”

A cemetery worker stepped forward with a heavy iron crowbar. The screech of metal against wood echoed through the rain-slicked graveyard, a sound that made several mourners turn away in horror. With a final, agonizing groan, the lid of the white casket was lifted. Henry lunged forward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Lily lay inside, dressed in a beautiful white lace dress. Her skin was terribly pale, but as Henry leaned closer, his breath catching in his throat, he saw it—a faint, almost imperceptible fog forming on the polished satin lining near her mouth. He grabbed her small, cold hand, desperately searching for a pulse. For a terrifying five seconds, there was nothing. Then, a tiny, sluggish flutter brushed against his fingertips.

“She’s warm!” Henry roared, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. “She’s breathing! Call an ambulance! Call them now!”

Chaos erupted. Katherine took a step backward, her eyes darting toward the cemetery gates. Sensing her panic, two of Henry’s close friends blocked her path. Within minutes, the sirens of an emergency vehicle wailed in the distance, cutting through the gloomy afternoon. As the paramedics rushed onto the scene, they quickly confirmed the unbelievable: Lily was indeed alive, but her heart rate was dangerously low, suspended in a state of medically induced hibernation.

As they loaded Lily into the ambulance, the police arrived, summoned by the chaotic scene. Henry stood by the vehicle, his gaze locked onto Katherine, who was trembling violently. The gold locket she clutched so tightly was now the center of his attention. “What is in that locket, Katherine?” Henry demanded, his voice cold as ice.
