The Interrupted Vows

The sun streamed through the towering stained-glass windows of St. Jude’s Cathedral, casting brilliant pools of amber and sapphire across the polished marble aisle. Daniel stood at the altar, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored navy tuxedo. Opposite him stood Sarah, a vision of pristine lace and diamonds, her smile radiant as the organ music swelled. It was the wedding of the season, a union designed to merge two of the city's most powerful real estate dynasties. Daniel’s mother, Evelyn, watched from the front pew, her expression one of triumphant satisfaction. Everything was perfect.

Then, the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral creaked open. The music faltered, the organist’s fingers slipping on the keys. A collective gasp rippled through the pews. A small, disheveled figure was running down the aisle. It was a boy, no older than six, barefoot and wearing a dirt-stained t-shirt. He looked wildly out of place amidst the high-society guests, but his eyes were locked onto Daniel with fierce determination.

Daniel’s confusion turned to shock as the boy stopped right at the altar.

"What is this?"
Daniel asked, his voice echoing in the silent church. The boy looked up, his eyes glassy with unshed tears.
"I need to show you something,"
he whispered, holding out a small, trembling hand. Resting in his palm was a heavy silver bracelet. Daniel’s breath hitched. He recognized it instantly—it was the custom-engraved bracelet he had bought years ago, bearing the words: "For my son - Daniel."

"No..."
Daniel whispered, dropping to his knees on the cold stone.
"Where did you get that?"
The boy sniffled, clutching the metal.
"My mom kept it for me. She gave it to me before she died."
Trembling, Daniel asked the question that made his heart stop:
"What was your mother's name?"
The boy looked at him.
"Clara. She said you left us the day I was born."
