Previously: When twelve-year-old Leo crashed a wealthy family's funeral claiming the deceased little girl was actually alive, the grieving father made a choice that exposed a dark family secret.

A Father's Desperate Choice

A collective gasp rippled through the gathered mourners. Evelyn immediately grabbed Arthur’s arm, her voice rising in a panicked pitch.

"Arthur, please, this is madness! You are letting a delusional, dirty street child desecrate our daughter's final resting place!" she cried, her tears finally seeming real, though born of panic rather than grief. "Do not do this to her memory!"

But Arthur was no longer listening to his wife. The desperate, burning truth in Leo’s eyes had awakened a primal instinct within him. He pushed Evelyn’s hand away and stepped toward the white casket.

"I said, open it," Arthur repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low growl. "Now."

With trembling hands, the undertakers stepped forward with their tools. The screech of the metal screws being undone was the only sound that competed with the steady patter of the rain. Evelyn took a step backward, her eyes darting toward the cemetery gates, but Arthur’s trusted bodyguard silently stepped into her path, blocking her exit.

Finally, the heavy lid of the white coffin was lifted.

Arthur held his breath, almost too terrified to look. He stepped forward and peered inside. Lily lay there, dressed in a beautiful white silk dress, her skin terribly pale. But as Arthur reached down and pressed his trembling fingers against her cold neck, his heart stopped.

There, beneath his fingertips, was a faint, rhythmic flutter.

"She... she has a pulse!" Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. "My God, she’s breathing!"

He grabbed his daughter’s hand, finding it stiff but slightly warm. He looked back at Leo, who was now standing quietly, breathing heavily.

"How did you know this?" Arthur demanded.

"My father is the local pharmacist," Leo explained, wiping the rain from his face. "I saw Mrs. Evelyn come into our shop when my father was out. She paid a shady supplier in the back room for a rare, untraceable sleeping toxin that mimics death. I followed her, and yesterday, I saw her put it in Lily’s tea through the window."
