Previously: When a homeless boy plays an unpublished lullaby at a high-society gala, a wealthy father realizes his missing son is alive—and his own wife is hiding a devastating secret.

A Ring of Truth

The silence in the grand lobby was suffocating as all eyes turned to Sarah. She stood trembling near the marble staircase, her hand clutching her throat. I ignored the whispers of the crowd and knelt in front of the boy, my hands shaking as I looked into his eyes. They were the exact same striking blue eyes as my late mother. He reached into his oversized fleece jacket and pulled out a silver chain. Hanging from it was a heavy gold signet ring engraved with my family's crest—the very ring that had mysteriously vanished twelve years ago, around the same time my ex-fiancée, Clara, had disappeared.

"My mother was Clara," the boy whispered, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "She raised me in the slums. She taught me that lullaby, telling me it was the only thing my father ever wrote for me. She kept this ring safe until the day she died last month."

Rage and confusion boiled inside me. I stood up and marched toward Sarah, demanding the truth. Trapped by the crowd of guests who blocked the exit, Sarah collapsed to her knees, weeping hysterically. The truth she confessed was more monstrous than I could have ever imagined. Twelve years ago, consumed by jealousy over my past with Clara and desperate to secure her place in my life, Sarah had discovered that Clara was pregnant with my child. Sarah paid a corrupt doctor to tell me our newborn had died at birth. In reality, she had threatened Clara, forcing her to flee the city with the baby and never return.

But Sarah’s tears quickly turned into a cold, desperate glare. She stood up, smoothing her white dress, and pulled a legal document from her clutch.

"Go ahead and call the police, Marcus," she hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "But remember the post-nuptial agreement you signed. If you divorce me or tarnish my name, I get eighty percent of your empire. You will be left with nothing."
