A collective murmur of shock rippled through the crowd. Elizabeth grabbed Robert's arm, her voice rising in a panicked pitch.

"Robert, please! This is madness! You're letting a troubled, dirty street child desecrate our daughter's memory!"

But Robert ignored her. The desperation in Danny’s eyes was a thread of hope he couldn't ignore, no matter how insane it seemed. He grabbed a crowbar from a stunned cemetery worker and jammed it into the seal of the casket. With a harsh screech of metal, the lid gave way.

Robert threw the lid back. Lily lay inside, pale and perfectly still, looking like an angel asleep in a bed of white satin. Robert reached in, his hand trembling as he pressed his fingers against her cold neck. For agonizing seconds, there was nothing. Then, a faint, rhythmic flutter tapped against his fingertips.

"She has a pulse!" Robert gasped, tears streaming down his face. "She's breathing!"

Panic erupted. Elizabeth turned to flee, but the guards, sensing something terrible was amiss, blocked her path. Robert scrambled out of the grave pit, his grief transforming into a cold, hard rage. He grabbed Elizabeth's expensive designer handbag and dumped its contents onto the wet grass.

Among the makeup and keys rolled a small, unlabeled glass vial and a half-empty syringe. Danny stepped forward, wiping mud from his forehead.

"I saw her through the window last week," the boy whispered. "I saw her putting those drops in Lily's juice. Lily fell asleep and wouldn't wake up. I knew what she did because my own stepfather used that same stuff on me to make me sleep."

Elizabeth collapsed to her knees, sobbing hysterically as the reality of her exposure set in. She had wanted Lily out of the picture to secure Robert's massive estate entirely for herself.
