Previously: When a ten-year-old orphan interrupted a wealthy father's funeral for his daughter, claiming she was buried alive, a terrifying truth about his new wife began to unravel.

A Heartbeat in the Dark

Grace instantly grabbed George’s arm, her fingers digging deep into his wool coat. Her voice was high and panicked, a sharp contrast to her previous gentle demeanor.

"George, this is madness! You are letting a delinquent desecrate our daughter's memory!" she cried, tears of anger spilling over her cheeks. "He is sick! Send him away!"

But George could not ignore the raw terror in Grace’s eyes, nor the absolute certainty in the boy’s plea. He shoved Grace’s hand away, his gaze fixed on the undertakers who hesitated beside the casket.

"I said, open it! Now!" George roared, stepping toward the casket himself.

With trembling hands, the funeral directors brought over the tools to unseal the heavy lid. The crowd watched in breathless, horrified suspense. Grace took a step backward, her eyes darting toward the cemetery gates. Two of George’s close friends, sensing something deeply wrong, quietly moved to block her path.

With a heavy groan, the lid of the white casket was lifted. George lunged forward, looking down at his daughter. Lily lay there, pale and still, dressed in her favorite pink dress. George reached in, his hand shaking violently as he pressed two fingers against the side of her neck. For three agonizing seconds, there was nothing. Then, beneath his fingertips, he felt it—a beat. A tiny, incredibly faint, but undeniably warm flutter.

"She's warm!" George gasped, tears instantly blinding his vision. "She's breathing! Call an ambulance! Call 911!"

The graveyard erupted into chaos. Mourners began screaming, and someone immediately dialed for emergency services. Grace, realizing her horrific plot had crumbled, turned and attempted to flee, but George’s friends grabbed her arms, pinning her in place despite her frantic struggles.

George lifted Lily’s fragile body from the casket, cradling her against his chest, wrapping his warm wool coat around her shivering form. He looked up at Luke, who stood panting, tears mixing with the rain on his face.

"How did you know this?" George whispered, his voice cracking. "Who are you?"

Luke wiped his nose on his sleeve, his eyes still wide. He pointed to Grace, who was now weeping hysterically as the police sirens began to wail in the distance.
