The Secrets in the Shroud
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered mourners. Beatrice stepped forward, her voice high and frantic as she tried to grab Charles’s arm. "Charles, please! This is madness! The boy is disturbed, he’s traumatizing everyone. Let our sweet girl rest in peace!" she pleaded, her eyes wide with a manic desperation. But Charles brushed her hand away, his gaze locked on the white wooden lid of the casket. "Open it," he repeated, his voice cold as steel.
The undertakers hesitated for a fraction of a second before retrieving their tools. With a heavy groan of wood and metal, the lid was pried open. Charles stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked down at his daughter. Clara looked peaceful, her skin pale, but as Charles reached in and touched her cheek, his breath caught. She wasn't stiff. Her skin was cool, but not the icy cold of death.
He pressed two fingers against her delicate neck. For a long, agonizing moment, there was nothing. Then, a faint, rhythmic flutter tapped against his fingertips. A pulse. It was incredibly slow, almost imperceptible, but it was there.
"She's warm! She's breathing!" Charles cried out, tears spilling down his face. "Call an ambulance! Now!"
Chaos erupted. Amidst the shouting, Beatrice took a step backward, attempting to slip into the crowd. But Toby, still held by the guards, pointed at her again. "Don't let her leave! She has the bottle in her purse!" Toby shouted. He explained frantically that he had been outside Clara’s window the night she fell ill, waiting to return a toy. He had seen Beatrice pouring a strange liquid from a dark vial into Clara's evening milk. Later, he found the discarded vial in the outdoor trash bin—a rare sedative known to induce a state of suspended animation mimicking death.
