Previously: At his daughter’s rainy funeral, Richard is stopped by a panicked boy claiming the girl is still alive—and that Richard's new wife is behind it all.

The Awful Truth Inside the Coffin

Sarah rushed forward, her voice suddenly shrill and devoid of its previous grief. "Richard, this is insane! The boy is traumatized, he doesn't know what he's talking about! We cannot desecrate our daughter's final moments like this!" she cried, grabbing Richard's arm. But the sheer terror in Sarah’s eyes spoke louder than her words. The seed of doubt planted by Leo had already taken deep root in Richard's desperate heart.

Ignoring his wife's protests, Richard turned to the undertakers. "Open it," he commanded, his voice shaking but absolute. When they hesitated, he stepped forward himself, his hands grappling with the brass latches. With a heavy, wet thud, the lid of the white coffin swung open.

Lily lay inside, dressed in a pale pink dress. She looked incredibly peaceful, but as Richard stared closer, he noticed something the medical examiner had apparently missed in his haste. Her skin lacked the telltale signs of rigor mortis, and her lips, while pale, still held a faint, ghostly hint of pink. Trembling, Richard pressed two fingers against the side of his daughter’s neck. He held his breath, the rain hammering against his back. Five seconds passed. Then ten.

There, beneath his fingertips, was a microscopic, agonizingly slow flutter. A pulse.

"She’s alive!" Richard screamed, his voice echoing across the muddy cemetery. "Call an ambulance! Now!"

Chaos erupted. Mourners scrambled for their phones while Richard lifted Lily’s limp body into his arms, feeling the faint warmth of her shallow breath. In the commotion, Sarah began backing away into the crowd, her face a mask of pure terror. But Leo was watching. "She's running!" the boy yelled, pointing at the escaping stepmother. Richard's brother tackled Sarah into the mud, holding her down as the distant wail of sirens began to pierce the gloomy afternoon air.
