Previously: At his daughter's rainy funeral, Arthur is stopped by a young boy making a terrifying claim: his daughter is still alive, and his wife is the one who put her to sleep.

The Truth Beneath the Lid

Evelyn’s eyes widened in panic. She grabbed Arthur’s arm, her fingers digging deep into his wool coat.

"Arthur, no! This is madness!" she cried, her voice high and strained. "This is a desecration of our daughter’s memory! You are letting a disturbed, dirty street child ruin Clara's final rest. Please, tell them to stop!"

But Arthur could not ignore the raw sincerity in Leo’s eyes. He shook Evelyn’s hand off his arm. He signaled to the cemetery workers, who stood frozen in shock.

"I said, open it. Now," Arthur repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument.

With trembling hands, the workers stepped forward. They began to unscrew the heavy silver fasteners of the white casket. Evelyn backed away slowly, her eyes darting toward the cemetery gates. Sensing her sudden urge to flee, Arthur’s trusted assistant, Robert, quietly stepped behind her, blocking her exit. Evelyn was trapped, her breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

A heavy click echoed through the rainy air as the final lock was released. The workers slowly lifted the lid. Arthur stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He looked inside. Clara lay there, dressed in a beautiful white silk dress. She looked perfectly peaceful, her skin pale, but as Arthur reached down and touched her cheek, his breath hitched. She wasn't cold. She was cool, but not icy.

Arthur pressed two fingers against the side of her neck. He closed his eyes, straining to feel anything over the sound of the falling rain. For three agonizing seconds, there was nothing. Then, a faint, incredibly slow *thump*. And another.

"She has a pulse!" Arthur roared, tears streaming down his face as he scooped his daughter into his arms. "Call an ambulance! Right now!"

He turned his gaze toward Evelyn, his face contorted with a mixture of profound relief and absolute fury.

"What did you do to her?" he whispered, the realization of her betrayal cutting deeper than any blade.
