Previously: When a sobbing boy grabbed Emily's coat in a dark alley, she was ready to run. But the gold pin in his hand changed everything.

The Search in the Rain

Emily fell to her knees on the wet brick, completely ignoring the cold water soaking through her trousers. She grabbed the boy's trembling shoulders, her eyes searching his face. Now that she looked closely, she could see the striking resemblance—the same deep green eyes and stubborn chin that her sister Sarah possessed.

"What is your name, sweetheart?" Emily asked, her voice shaking as she tried to keep her composure.
"Leo," the boy sobbed, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "My mom is really sick. She's hiding in the old warehouse basement down the street. She told me to look for a lady wearing this pin near the gallery. She said you were my aunt."

Emily’s heart shattered. For seven agonizing years, her family had searched for Sarah. They had filed police reports, hired private investigators, and eventually, faced the grim assumption that she was gone forever. To find out she was alive, sick, and living in squalor just blocks away was a shock Emily could barely process.

"Take me to her, Leo. Right now," Emily urged, grabbing his hand.

Leo led her through a maze of dark, rain-soaked alleys, turning corner after corner until they reached the rusting gates of an abandoned industrial building. They descended a flight of crumbling concrete stairs into a damp, drafty basement lit only by a single flickering lantern.

There, huddled on a makeshift bed of cardboard and thin, tattered blankets, was a frail woman. Her face was pale, her breathing shallow and labored. When she heard their footsteps, she weakly raised her head. Despite the hollow cheeks and the toll of years of hardship, Emily recognized her instantly.

"Sarah?" Emily whispered, rushing to the bedside and falling to her knees.
"Emily... you found him," Sarah breathed, a faint, tearful smile touching her dry lips before she broke into a violent coughing fit.
