Previously: When an eight-year-old boy stopped Hannah on a dimly lit street, she expected a beggar. Instead, he held out a rare gold pin identical to her own, changing her life forever.

The Path Into the Shadows

Hannah dropped to her knees on the cold pavement, completely ignoring the dampness seeping through her trousers. She gently took the boy's small, trembling hands in hers.

"What is your name?"
she asked, her voice shaking.
"Oliver,"
the boy whispered, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his blue hoodie. Hannah felt a sob rising in her own throat.
"Oliver, where did your mother get this pin? Where is she right now?"

Oliver pointed a shaking finger down a dark, narrow alleyway that led toward the industrial district.

"She’s at the shelter on Oak Street. She’s really sick, and she told me if I ever got lost or if she couldn't wake up, I had to find the lady with the matching pin. She said you were her sister, Hannah."
Hearing her own name spoken by this child shattered the last of Hannah's composure. Clara had remembered her. Clara had been looking for her.

Without a second thought, Hannah grabbed Oliver’s hand.

"Take me to her, Oliver. Right now,"
she urged. Together, they ran through the rain-slicked streets, the neon signs of the city blurring into streaks of colored light. Hannah's mind raced with a thousand questions. Why had Clara vanished eight years ago? Why had she lived in hiding, suffering in poverty, while Hannah searched fruitlessly for her?

As they reached the heavy metal doors of the Oak Street shelter, the smell of damp wool and disinfectant hit Hannah's senses. Oliver led her past the crowded cots of the main hall to a quiet corner in the back, shielded by a thin plastic curtain. Hannah's heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She reached out, her hand trembling violently as she pulled the curtain aside, unprepared for the truth that was about to be revealed.
