The Brave Diner Owner Who Saved a Terrified Girl from Her Ruthless Family
Previously: When a terrified young girl takes refuge under a diner table, a local stranger must stand up to a dangerous man claiming to protect his family.
Caleb sneered, taking a step back as if to assess the older man. He laughed, a dry, humorless sound that rattled Grace's nerves even deeper in her hiding spot.
The Confrontation Escalates
"You don't know what you're getting into, old man," Caleb warned, his hand drifting toward his pocket. "That girl is my stepsister. She’s minors-adjacent, and her legal guardian is looking for her. You’re harboring a runaway. That’s a federal offense."
George slowly slid out of the booth, rising to his full height. Though his hair was silver and his face lined with age, he stood well over six feet tall, with broad shoulders that had spent a lifetime doing heavy labor. He didn't look like a man who feared threats.
"I know exactly who you are, Caleb Vance," George said quietly, his voice echoing in the quiet diner. "And I know about your father's 'guardianship.' I also know that Grace turned eighteen last week."
Caleb’s face went pale. He hadn't expected the old diner owner in the middle of nowhere to know their names, let alone Grace's age. He stumbled backward a half-step, his bravado wavering. "How do you—"
"Your father has been trying to force her to sign over her grandfather’s timberland ever since the old man passed," George continued, stepping out from behind the table to block Caleb's path. "He sent you to track her down because she took the deed and ran. Am I warm?"
Grace gasped softly from beneath the booth, astonished. She had never met this man before. How did he know everything? Caleb's eyes narrowed into slits of pure malice. Realizing his leverage was gone, he reached into his jacket, his fingers wrapping around the handle of a pocket knife. "I'm taking her back, old man. Move, or I’ll move you myself."
