Previously: When Colonel Lawrence burst into the chaotic apartment to save a sobbing woman, he never expected to face the rebellious son he thought was thousands of miles away.

The Weight of Blood

The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by Chloe’s ragged breathing. Lawrence stared down at Justin, his mind racing through a blur of painful memories. Justin had disappeared two years ago, cutting off all contact with his family after a spiral of bad decisions, theft, and anger issues. To find him here, acting like a monster, was a dagger to Lawrence's heart.

"Father?" Justin spat, a mocking sneer forming on his lips. "Of course it's you. Still playing the big hero, aren't you?"

Lawrence kept his knee firmly planted on his son's back, though his hands trembled slightly. He looked over at Chloe, who was staring at them both in utter confusion and terror.

"Who is he to you?" Lawrence asked, his voice cracking with an emotion he rarely showed.

Chloe wiped her tears, her voice shaking violently. She explained that she had met Justin a year ago, unaware of his dark past. When his behavior turned controlling and aggressive, she tried to leave him. In retaliation, Justin had stolen her identity, drained her bank accounts, and tracked her to this temporary apartment, demanding she hand over the rest of her savings so he could flee the state.

"He said he would kill me if I called the police," Chloe sobbed, pointing to the messy boxes. "He was packing my things to make it look like I just moved away."

Justin laughed, a bitter, hollow sound from the floor. He looked up at Lawrence, his eyes pleading but manipulative.

"Dad, come on. You're not going to believe this girl over your own son, are you? I just wanted what was mine. Let me go. We can walk out of here together."

Lawrence looked at his son's bandaged forehead—likely from some other violent altercation—and then at Chloe's bruised arms. The betrayal cut deep. His own flesh and blood had become the very evil Lawrence had spent his entire life fighting against.
