Chief Higgins sneered, stepping forward to grab the flash drive from the floor himself. He was determined to protect his benefactor. But before his hand could touch the plastic casing, the loud wail of sirens echoed from the courtyard outside. The main entrance doors slid open, and a squad of state troopers flooded the lobby, led by Sheriff Thomas—a close military contact Marcus had texted the moment he first suspected foul play at the hospital.

Sheriff Thomas marched down the hallway, his eyes taking in the scene. He looked at the bruised Vance, the defensive security guards, and his old friend Marcus. "What’s the situation here, Sergeant?" Thomas asked.

Marcus pointed to the flash drive. "Nurse Benson has evidence of corporate manslaughter and embezzlement. Mr. Vance here just assaulted her to try and destroy it. I intervened to protect a civilian."

Vance scrambled to his feet, trying to regain his composure.

"This is a misunderstanding! I am the director of this board! You can't trust the word of a disgruntled nurse and a stray soldier!"

But his authority had vanished. Sheriff Thomas picked up the flash drive and handed it to one of his deputies. "We'll let the federal investigators decide that. Handcuff him," the sheriff ordered, pointing at Vance. The state troopers stepped past the silent, defeated hospital security guards and secured Vance’s hands behind his back. As he was led away in disgrace, the hallway fell into a peaceful quiet.

Sarah looked up at Marcus, tears of relief finally spilling over her cheeks. "Thank you," she whispered. "If you hadn't been here, he would have destroyed the truth, and those children would still be in danger."

Marcus smiled warmly, patting Buster’s head. "You're the real hero, Sarah. You risked everything to stand up for the innocent. We just did our duty."

Weeks later, the hospital board was fully restructured, and the pediatric ward received the state-of-the-art equipment it desperately needed. Marcus and Sarah remained close, united by a bond forged in a moment of pure courage.
