Mason’s face darkened, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the table. For a tense moment, it seemed as though he might lunge at the older man. But Robert’s unyielding stare and broad shoulders suggested he was not a man to be easily intimidated. Recognizing he was at a temporary disadvantage, Mason spat on the floor, pointed a warning finger at Robert, and growled,

"You don't know what you're getting into, old man. I'll be back, and she's coming with me."

He turned on his heel and stormed out into the rain.

The moment the diner door closed, Robert carefully helped Lily climb out from beneath the booth. She was shaking so hard she could barely stand. Robert slid a warm plate of pancakes toward her and spoke in a gentle, reassuring tone.

"You're safe now, kiddo. My name is Robert. Why is that man chasing you?"

Between tearful breaths, Lily poured her heart out. She explained that Mason was her stepbrother. After her father passed away a month ago, Mason had taken control of everything. But Lily had recently discovered a hidden lockbox containing her father’s true will. It left the family farm and a significant life insurance policy solely to Lily, to be held in a trust until she turned eighteen. Mason had found out, destroyed the original copy he possessed, and was now trying to force Lily to sign a document relinquishing her rights before she could contact anyone.

"He threatened to send me away to a state home where nobody would ever find me if I didn't sign,"

Lily sobbed, clutching her bruised arms.

"I ran away with the only backup copy of the will. He tracked me here."

Robert’s heart ached for the young girl. He looked at the soot on her face and the fear in her eyes, and a deep sense of justice flared within him. He knew he couldn't let Mason destroy this child's life.
