A Mask Slips Away

The man on the floor, groaning and clutching his ribs, was not a random mall predator. As he stared up through a mess of brown hair, Danielle gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. It was Justin—her husband of eight years. The man she shared a home with, the man she believed was currently at an out-of-town corporate seminar, was lying at her feet in a black blazer she had bought him for their last anniversary.

Officer Young knelt down, placing a firm hand on Justin's shoulder. "Sir, stay down," the officer commanded, before turning his gaze to Danielle and the weeping woman in the suede jacket. "Do you ladies know this man? Is everyone alright?"

Danielle couldn't speak. Her eyes darted from her groaning husband to Brittany, who was still hyperventilating against the mirrored pillar. But the shock only deepened. As Brittany lowered her hands from her face, Danielle recognized her too. It was Brittany, Danielle's own estranged younger sister, whom she hadn't seen or spoken to in over three years after a bitter family falling out.

"Justin? Brittany? What is going on here?"

Danielle whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and rising fury. The gathering crowd of shoppers watched in rapt silence, sensing the raw, personal drama unfolding before them.

Justin slowly pushed himself up to a sitting position, his face pale with a mix of pain and sheer embarrassment.
