The Winter's Betrayal

The air outside St. Jude's Cathedral was sharp enough to cut glass. Snow, fine as powdered sugar, swirled around the gothic limestone steps, clinging to the ancient stone like a shroud. It was a freezing winter dusk, the kind that seeped into your bones and refused to leave. Amber light spilled from the cathedral lanterns, catching the icy crystals in the wind, painting the wet cobblestones with a deceptive warmth. Parked at the curb, a vintage Maybach gleamed like polished obsidian, its engine a low, resonant hum against the gale's howl.

Armand Dubois, 28, stood at the bottom of the steps, a picture of arrogant privilege in his midnight-blue velvet tuxedo. His posture was rigid, his diamond cufflinks flashing as he sneered. Beside him, 26-year-old Hannah, the chauffeur, was ramrod-straight in her weather-beaten charcoal wool greatcoat and peaked cap. The shadow it cast over her sharp jawline only accentuated the piercing intensity of her emerald eyes.

Then, Genevieve, 24, appeared at the portico. The runaway bride. She shivered, her hand-embroidered ivory silk gown a stark contrast to the blizzard. Her cathedral veil, torn and streaming, whipped around her like a ghost.

Armand: "Pick it up, grease monkey—that's more cash than your pathetic bloodline will ever see!"

He hurled a crumpled wad of cash into the dirty snow, right at Hannah's polished black boots. His upper lip curled in malicious delight. Hannah remained silent, her gaze fixed on him, chin motionless. Her jaw clenched, a single icy gust fluttering the collar of her coat. Her composure was absolute, her eyes boring into Armand with lethal intent.

Hannah: "Raise a hand to me again, Dubois, and you lose it permanently."

Enraged by her defiance, Armand lunged, his gloved hand swinging in a vicious backhand slap. But Hannah was impossibly fast. Her own gloved hand shot up, catching his wrist with a loud leather-on-leather crack. She twisted, her grip like iron, forcing Armand to gasp as he stumbled to his knees in the freezing slush. His pupils dilated in shock, breath hitching in his throat as blue veins bulged on his temple.

Suddenly, the cathedral's massive oak doors burst open. Genevieve sprinted down the ice-slicked steps, ripping her diamond-encrusted veil away and casting it into the howling wind.

Genevieve: "Get your filthy hands off her, Armand—the wedding is off and your family is finished!"

Armand's head snapped around, his mouth trembling in horrified disbelief as the blizzard raged around them.
