Previously: When Prince Marcus is forced to marry a bride whose head is locked in a wooden barrel, he opens the latch only to discover a horrifying royal conspiracy.

Secrets of the Crown

The carriage ride to Marcus's castle was silent, save for the rattling of the wooden barrel against the leather seats. Marcus kept his hand on the hilt of his sword, his mind racing with the implications of King Henry's threat. As soon as they were safely inside his private chambers, Marcus locked the heavy oak doors, ensuring they were completely alone.

He approached the trembling bride and used the key Henry had forced upon him to unlock the brass collar. With a heavy groan of wood and metal, the barrel was lifted. The young woman collapsed onto the plush rug, gasping for air. Marcus knelt beside her, gently untying the tight gag from her mouth.

"Please, mercy, my lord," she wept, cowering from him. "I had no choice. He would have executed my entire family if I refused."

"I will not hurt you," Marcus promised, handing her a goblet of water. "Tell me who you are, and tell me what happened to Princess Isabella."

She drank greedily before looking up with haunted eyes. "My name is Sarah. I was Isabella's personal handmaiden. Princess Isabella is dead, my lord. She discovered that King Henry poisoned the Queen to seize absolute control of the treasury. When she threatened to expose him, he murdered her in her own chambers."

Marcus felt a chill run down his spine. The alliance was a complete sham, designed to bind his kingdom to a murderer. Sarah grabbed Marcus's sleeve, her hands trembling violently.

"He put me in her clothes and locked me in that horrific barrel so you wouldn't see my face until the vows were legal," Sarah whispered. "But it is worse than you think. Henry knows you will eventually uncover the truth. He has sent his personal assassin to make sure neither of us survives our wedding night."

Just then, the heavy iron handle of the chamber door began to turn. A shadow stretched across the threshold.
