Previously: Chloe thought she was marrying into ultimate wealth, but a cruel gesture toward a helpless old woman at the altar ruined her life before the vows were even spoken.

A Costly Lesson in Humanity

Chloe’s blood ran cold. She remembered the thick stack of papers Arthur’s lawyers had handed her. She had been so eager to secure her future that she had barely read the fine print, trusting her own legal counsel who had assured her it was standard.

"Clause fourteen,"

Arthur explained, his voice echoing for all the guests to hear.

"Any act of moral turpitude, public cruelty, or behavior that brings disrepute to the family name prior to the formal ceremony nullifies all financial agreements and constitutes immediate grounds for an annulment, with zero alimony or settlement."

Chloe felt the ground slip beneath her muddy heels. "No... no, that's not fair! Julian, please!" she begged, reaching out a muddy hand toward her groom.

Julian finally looked at her, his eyes filled with cold detachment.

"My grandmother gave up everything to raise my father and build this legacy,"

he said softly.

"If you can treat a helpless old woman like garbage, you would do the same to me if I ever lost my wealth. My father is right. We are finished."

With those final words, Julian helped his grandmother stand and gently guided her toward the estate house, followed closely by Arthur. The security guards, who had finally arrived, did not escort the elderly woman away—instead, they walked straight to Chloe.

"Ma'am, we need you to leave the property immediately," the head guard said firmly.

Chloe looked around at the crowd of wealthy socialites, influencers, and business partners she had spent months trying to impress. None of them looked at her with pity. Some were whispering, others were recording her on their phones, and many simply turned their backs.

Drenched in mud, her dreams of wealth shattered, Chloe was forced to walk back down the slate path alone. She had wanted a wedding that everyone would remember, and she got exactly that—but for all the wrong reasons. She learned the hardest way possible that true character is revealed by how we treat those who can do absolutely nothing for us.
