Previously: A disgraced astrophysicist facing the end of his career is stunned when a humble janitor offers a solution to an impossible problem. But the janitor's secret is far more profound than he could ever imagine.

An Unexpected Intervention

Martha Vance stepped forward, her movements surprisingly fluid for her age. She reached into the pocket of her faded denim jacket and produced a thick, neon-orange grease marker. Courtney watched, a flicker of annoyance cutting through his panic. “Get your filthy custodian hands off my research, old woman!” he spat, lunging to shove her aside. But Martha was faster. With a swift, practiced pivot, she intercepted his flailing arm, her grip like iron on his wrist. The sudden, jarring halt sent a shockwave through him, his momentum absorbed with an almost unnerving ease. His breath hitched, pupils dilating in stunned disbelief. He was utterly powerless.

“You’re treating space-time as continuous, son,” Martha’s voice was a low gravelly rumble, cutting through the downpour. “Your curvature tensor ignores quantum drag.”

Courtney stared, affronted. Quantum drag? It was a fringe theory, dismissed by mainstream science. Yet, her words… they resonated with a disturbing familiarity. He saw her hand move, the orange marker a vibrant streak against the dark equations. With astonishing speed and precision, she struck through his most complex calculations. Then, with squeaking friction, she began to write. New symbols, elegant and alien, flowed from her marker, filling the void left by his failed attempts.

“Shift the orbital burn by fourteen degrees at periapsis and your probe survives,” she stated, her voice calm and commanding.

Courtney could only watch, paralyzed. The equations she’d written… they were beautiful. They were… correct. A cold dread, mixed with a dawning, terrifying awe, began to creep into his soul. His own encrypted NASA receiver, tucked inside his breast pocket, suddenly vibrated, emitting a series of rapid, harmonic chimes. Full probe telemetry lock. The Odyssey was responding. The impossible had just happened.
