Previously: When Clara's car broke down in a quiet rural town, she only expected a quick radiator fix. She never imagined the mechanic holding the wrench would be the man she abandoned ten years ago.

The Ghost of a Decade Past

Clara stood frozen on the dusty gravel as the mechanic began working on the damaged hose. The name stitched in faded red thread on his canvas vest confirmed her worst fears and her wildest hopes: Thomas. It was indeed him. Ten years ago, they had been inseparable, planning a life together in this very state. But when her father's debts forced her family to flee overnight, Clara had been coerced into leaving without a trace, carrying a secret she was too terrified to share.

As Thomas reached for a wrench, his sleeve slid back, revealing a faded silver bracelet on his wrist—the very one Clara had gifted him on their last night together. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes, but she quickly blinked them away, terrified of what would happen if he recognized her. She had changed her hair, her style, her life. But secrets have a way of unraveling in the most unexpected places.

Toby stepped closer to the car, fascinated by the tools. "Do you like fast cars, mister?" the boy asked, his voice bright and curious. Thomas chuckled, a sound that sent a shiver down Clara's spine.

"I used to build them, kiddo. Just like this one,"

Thomas replied, looking up. But as he looked at Toby, his smile slowly faded. He stared at the boy's face—at the unique, piercing green-flecked eyes that matched his own perfectly, and the small, crescent-shaped birthmark just below Toby's left temple.

Thomas slowly stood up, the wrench dangling from his hand. He looked from Toby to Clara, his expression shifting from professional kindness to utter disbelief. The warmth of the afternoon sun suddenly felt suffocating as the silence stretched between them.

"Clara?"

he whispered, his voice cracking. He looked back at Toby, the realization hitting him like a physical blow.

"Is he... is he mine?"

Clara’s hand flew to her mouth, the sunglasses slipping from her fingers and clattering onto the gravel below. The moment of reckoning had arrived, and there was nowhere left to run.
