Previously: When Clara's classic blue muscle car broke down at a dusty roadside station, she only expected a quick repair. Instead, the bearded mechanic recognized the engine—and the little boy in the back seat.

A Ghost from the Past

Luke stared at the initials, his breath catching in his throat. The world around him seemed to quiet down, leaving only the sound of the wind chimes hanging from the station's porch. He slowly stood up, looking from the engine to the boy in the red t-shirt. Now that he looked closely, Toby had the same bright hazel eyes and stubborn chin that Leo had possessed as a child.

"Where did you get this car?"

Luke asked, trying to keep his voice steady, though a tremor betrayed his composure.

Clara took a step back, her defensive instincts immediately kicking in. She clutched her purse tightly.

"It was my late husband’s,"

she replied cautiously.

"He passed away a year ago. Why do you ask?"

Toby stepped closer to his mother, looking up at Luke.

"My dad said this car was magic,"

the boy piped up.

"He told me it would always bring us to the right place if we ever got lost."

Luke felt a tear prick the corner of his eye. He looked at Clara, his voice barely a whisper.

"Your husband... was his name Leo?"

Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Her eyes welled with tears as she stared at the bearded mechanic.

"How... how do you know that?"

she whispered.

Luke pointed to the custom-welded bracket beneath the hood.

"Because I’m the other 'L' in those initials,"

Luke said, his voice cracking with emotion.

"I'm Luke. Leo was my younger brother. He ran away ten years ago after our father’s garage went bankrupt, and I never heard from him again. I thought he hated me."

Clara’s knees went weak. She reached into her purse and pulled out a worn, yellowed leather pouch.

"He didn't hate you,"

Clara sobbed.

"He spent his whole life trying to find a way back to you. And he left something for you in the glovebox."
