Previously: When a traumatized soldier tackled young Emily into the snow, her mother Clara screamed in terror. But his frantic actions weren't a hallucination—they were the only thing that saved her.

The Shadow of the Past

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs as she pulled Emily into her arms, staring at the brother she thought she had lost forever. Luke was shivering, his breathing shallow and rapid. To anyone else, his behavior looked like a severe episode of combat-related PTSD. But as Clara looked down the street, she saw the dark green pickup truck stop at the corner, its brake lights glowing like angry red eyes in the twilight.

She knew that truck. It belonged to Marcus, her abusive ex-husband who had sworn he would find them after his release from prison. For months, Clara had lived in hiding, changing her name and moving to this remote suburb, hoping she had finally escaped his reach. She had no idea how he had tracked them down, but seeing the vehicle made the blood run cold in her veins.

"Luke, is it really you?" Clara sobbed, her hands shaking as she touched his muddy jacket. "How did you find us? How did he?"

Luke struggled to his feet, pulling Clara and Emily behind the shelter of a thick brick pillar near the porch. His military training was the only thing keeping his panic focused. He explained in rushed, whispered tones that he had been discharged under medical supervision and had immediately gone looking for Clara, only to discover that Marcus had been released early on a technicality. Luke had followed Marcus’s trail for three days, realizing the man had hired a private investigator to find Clara’s new address.

"I saw him loading a hunting rifle in his truck down the road," Luke whispered, his eyes scanning the quiet street. "He wasn't just coming to talk, Clara. He was coming to take Emily. I had to get to her first."

The green pickup truck suddenly shifted into reverse, backing up slowly toward their driveway. The passenger window rolled down, revealing the dark silhouette of a man. Clara felt a paralyzing wave of terror. Without Luke's sudden intervention, Emily would have been standing completely exposed in the middle of the driveway.
