The Storm Brews at the Docks

The air in the dockside tavern was thick with the smell of salt, stale beer, and desperation. Rain lashed against the cracked glass of the skylight, each drop a percussive beat in the symphony of the storm outside. Amber cage lights cast long, dancing shadows across the damp, weathered timber floorboards, illuminating rusted chains hanging like macabre decorations from the low ceiling. It was a place where secrets festered and fortunes were lost.

Into this grim tableau strode Carter Ross, a man whose charcoal overcoat couldn't hide the venom in his sneer. At 45, his thinning hair was slicked back, a predatory gleam in his eyes as he cornered Clara, a woman whose 78 years were etched deeply into her face. Her fraying teal cardigan did little to shield her from the chill, or from the ruthless intent of the man before her.

Carter didn't waste time. With a vicious backhand, he sent the ceramic mug of coffee from Clara's trembling, arthritic hands flying. It shattered against the floor, the hot liquid splashing like a dark omen. Clara flinched, terror seizing her frail frame. Tears welled, her chin quivering.

"Sign over the property deed today, Clara, or you won't survive the winter!" Carter snarled, his voice dripping with cruelty.

Clara remained silent, paralyzed by fear, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks. Carter's rage escalated. He drew back a fist, the leather glove a stark contrast to Clara's fragile form. She instinctively raised her arms, bracing for the inevitable.

"Please Carter, have mercy on me!" she whimpered, her voice cracking.

But Carter's fist snapped forward, a blur of motion aimed directly at her head. Just as impact seemed certain, a shadow detached itself from the tavern's gloom.
