The storm outside mirrored the tempest brewing within the desolate 24-hour diner. Rain hammered the panoramic windows, blurring the crimson and turquoise neon reflections that bled across the cracked linoleum floor. Steam rose from coffee percolators, mingling with the aroma of burnt coffee and wet wool. In a cracked vinyl booth, Professor Courtney Sterling, 52, with an icy arrogance in her gaze and immaculate charcoal houndstooth trench coat, held a vivid oil portrait by its edges. Below her, Mateo, a young painter, 22, with unruly curls and dark circles under her eyes, shivered in a paint-splattered denim jacket.

The Professor's Cruelty

Courtney tilted the portrait under the harsh fluorescent light, her expression one of venomous disdain. “Derivative trash, Mateo,” she began, her voice cutting like a razor. “You are an untalented nobody who will die waiting tables in this dump.” Mateo remained silent, her chin quivering, tears welling as her white-knuckled hands gripped the table’s edge.

“Derivative trash, Mateo. You are an untalented nobody who will die waiting tables in this dump.”

With a malicious laugh, Courtney violently drove both thumbs through the canvas, tearing it in two. The explosive sound of ripping fabric and snapping wood filled the brief silence. She tossed the shredded remnants into a pool of spilled black coffee on the table. “I just saved the art world from your embarrassing delusions,” she mocked, her laughter echoing hollowly.

“I just saved the art world from your embarrassing delusions.”

Mateo gasped, her pupils dilating in heartbreak as a heavy tear traced through the paint smudge on her cheek. The world outside the booth seemed to fade away, replaced by the stark reality of her ruined masterpiece and the professor’s triumphant cruelty.
